This workshop combines clear anatomical information about embryological formation of the body with the experience and sense of space. Through verbal introduction of important landmarks in our embryological development it guides into the experience of sensing and relating to space. We will retrace the embodied knowledge of space and explore the body’s knowledge about creating and relating to spaces. Personal touch and movement will be part of the workshop.
In our embryological development we are growing through creating spaces and inner spaces form us. Fluid movements, currents, inner and outer forces shape our development.
We move and we are moved while we grow. Gravity, centrifugal and -petal forces, attraction and repulsion, cell migration are inner movements that create our existence and bring movement into life.
We are formed by flow and we are forming flow. Spaces are formed and spaces form us. We generate inner architectural landspaces, we create matter, structure and tissues and we give rise to their dissolution. How do we navigate through sensations and stimuli?
In this workshop we relate embryological development to our sensation of space. We explore how we live our inner spaces and how our tissues allow us to be in relation with outer spaces and the architecture we live in. We are constantly in resonance with what is around us and with what is in us. How we see, hear, feel the environment is shaped by our inner experience of form, movement and space.
Based on embodying spaces, this workshop invites you to explore how bodily sensations and sensory experiences can inspire, inform, and complement your architectural practice. The awareness that we are space-related beings—from our very first embryological development to our movements today—offers new perspectives on the relevance of architectural spaces in our self-consciousness and proprioception, as well as in our interconnectedness with others. Our relationship to space, which begins with the creation of our inner spaces and extends to the spaces we inhabit, forms the ground for our cohabitation in the world and our living and working together with others. In this regard, this workshop provides an opportunity to align body and mind—to sense and think, embody and express, design and create spaces and spatial relations.
