This workshop introduces the core principles of the reciprocal relations of embodied knowing and architectural thinking. It explores how body and space relate and how embodied knowing and architectural knowledge are reciprocally interconnected.
Body and space are reciprocally impacting one another. There would not be space for us, if we would not perceive it with all our senses, explore it through movement and feel it resonate in our bodies.
Our bodies themselves are spacious and space relating: We move around in the spaces we dwell in, with every breath we take in the air around us and inflate the interior spaces of our bodies, and the architecture of the spaces that surround us, impacts the proprioception of our bodies. Tall ceilings encourage our bodies to raise, while dense and compact spaces make our bodies contract. Furthermore, these movements are associated with how we feel – physical, somatically, and also emotionally – as our feelings as well are spatio-corporeal: we may feel uplifted and lightened, or we may feel dense, compressed and literally down.
This workshop introduces you to the different principles of how space and body relate: How the physical body is referred to in measure, scale, and shape. How the sensory body, the soma, perceives the ambiance of a place and how all senses are touched by this experience. How, as social bodies, we act, perform and live in architectural spaces as well as in the spatio-social spatial constellations we co-create.
Understanding better, how architecture and space are perceived with our bodies, enables you to draw more consciously from your personal archive of embodied spatial memories and to actively include this knowledge in your design-process. Perception and conception interdepend – the more precisely you comprehend how certain architectural situations are perceived, the easier you are able to anticipate how the spaces you design are going to be experienced and how they affect the people who perceive and live them.
With this workshop I share the essential insights of my research on the reciprocal relating of architecture and the human body – and the great potential and learning it provides for how we design and create our built environment.
